Juliet Ball works with stoneware and porcelain clays to make fine functional and decorative pieces. All her work is thrown on the potters’ wheel, glazed with her own glazes made from natural raw materials and fired to very high temperatures in a gas kiln. Her wide range of domestic stoneware, in quiet natural colours and including mugs, jugs, teapots, bowls in all sizes and much more, is all pleasant to use and practical, suitable for the dishwasher and the microwave. In porcelain she makes functional and decorative pieces; mugs, jugs, dishes, also nightlight holders and vases, and she uses mainly soft celadon duck egg blue glazes to highlight the delicacy of the porcelain clay. Another aspect of Juliet Ball’s work is her smoke-fired pieces, mainly bowls and vases whose crackled white ash-glaze contrasts subtly with the rough smokey grey clay. She sells her work from her studio at Cloonmore, and also at the Galway Market every Saturday and at Roundstone Market on Sundays during the summer months. She also supplies some shops and will have a stall at the Galway Potters’ Market which she established along with potter Stephen Price, at the Spanish Arch during the Galway arts Festival. Her studio, Cloonmore Pottery, is situated 6 miles from Moycullen, near Lough Corrib, between Collinamuck Pier and Knockferry Pier, and visitors are welcome.
